THE BANON FAMILY

Capt. A.T. Banon, a distinguished Irish officer serving in the British army with the Bengal Lancers stationed in Calcutta, was also the son of the Surgeon General based in Murree (now in Pakistan). Notably, he held prominent positions as the first treasurer of the Indian National Congress and as a member of the theosophical society, collaborating closely with Annie Besant. Due to his progressive ideals and nationalist activities, he was discharged from the British Army. Along with his American friend, "Mr. Lee," Capt. Banon settled in Manali during the 1870s. Marrying a woman from Gharwal, he raised a family of four sons. Importantly, he introduced English apple and other fruit saplings, laying the foundation for Himachal's renowned apple orchards. The Banon family significantly contributed to elevating Manali's profile on the global stage. Their descendants were instrumental in infrastructure development, including road and bridge construction, as well as electricity generation, notably supplying power to the circuit house during visits by the late Indian Prime Minister Nehru. Moreover, they played a pioneering role in fostering the tourism and fruit industries in the Kullu Valley.
